PM launched multiple technological initiatives for courts in India

Why in the News?

Recently PM Modi has inaugurated the Diamond Jubilee celebration of the Supreme Court and unveiled several technology initiatives.

What are the various technology initiatives launched?

Digital Supreme Court Reports (Digi SCR)1. It will provide Supreme Court judgments to the citizens of the country free of cost and in electronic format.
2. The Key features of digital SCR include access to all 519 volumes of Supreme Court reports since 1950 in a user-friendly, open access digital format.
Digital Courts 2.0 application1. It is a recent initiative under the e-Courts project which aims to provide district court judges with electronic access to court records.
2. It also uses artificial intelligence (AI) to transcribe speech into text instantly.
New website of the Supreme CourtThe new website offers bilingual English and Hindi formats, along with a user-friendly interface redesign.

 What are the other initiatives for courts in India?

1) National Judicial Data Grid (NJDG) It is a database of orders, judgments and case details of 18,735 District & Subordinate Courts and High Courts. It was created as an online platform under the eCourts Project.

2) AI-powered portals
a. SUPACE (Supreme Court Portal for Assistance in Court’s Efficiency)– AI based portal for making the research work easier for judges.
b. SUVAS (Supreme Court Vidhik Anuvaad Software) AI tool developed for the Supreme Court. It helps in translating judgments into various regional languages.
