News: On World Rhino Day, PM Modi highlighted rhino conservation through Project Rhino, which supports protection, habitat management and population studies.
About Project Rhino
- Project Rhino was launched on World Rhino Day, September 22, 2026.
- Aim: It is a dedicated programme aimed at providing financial and technical support to states that host the greater one-horned rhinoceros.
- Nodal Ministry: Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change
- Focus: It will focus on strengthening protection, managing habitats, improving genetic diversity, and scientifically understanding rhino population trends.
- Components:
- It will strengthen anti-poaching measures and support habitat management, including grasslands and movement corridors.
- It will also assess rhino genetics to monitor genetic diversity, reduce inbreeding risks and ensure long-term population health.
- It will promote scientific population monitoring to track growth, reproduction, mortality and other demographic trends for better conservation planning.
About World Rhino Day
- World Rhino Day is celebrated globally every year on September 22.
- It is being celebrated since 2011.
- It is celebrated to raise awareness about protecting the five remaining rhinoceros species.
- Theme: 2026’s theme is “Keep the Five Alive.”
