News: Odisha has formed a high-level inquiry committee to investigate the alleged forced relocation of villages from the Satkosia Tiger Reserve, following residents’ claims of eviction from their ancestral homes.
About Satokosia Tiger Reserve

- Location: It is situated in Odisha. It is spread over four districts, including Nayagarh, Cuttack, Angul and Boudh.
- Naming: The name ‘Satkosia’ originates from the word ‘Sat Kos’ – ‘Sat’ meaning seven and ‘Kos’ meaning two miles, which apparently indicates the 14 miles length of the gorge of River Mahanadi that crosses this wildlife region.
- Area: It covers an area of approx. 963 sq. km.
- Establish Year: It was established in 2007.
- It comprises two adjoining sanctuaries, namely Baisipalli Sanctuary and Satkosia Gorge Sanctuary.
- Rivers associated: Mahanadi and Satkosia river flows nearby and through the reserve area.
- Vegetation: The reserve is characterized by North Indian tropical moist deciduous forests and moist peninsular low-level sal forests.
- Flora: Sal is the dominant tree species in the reserve. Other associated species include Asan, Dhaura, Bamboo, and Simal.
- Fauna: It inhabits species such as tigers, leopards, elephants, spotted deer, sambar, chowsingha, barking deer, bison, wild dogs, sloth bears, jackals, giant squirrels, and porcupines.
- It also provides a natural habitat for two endangered species the freshwater crocodile and the gharial.
