Introduction
Generative AI is rapidly entering children’s learning and digital environments through schools, educational apps, search engines and games. It can support personalised learning, creativity and teachers, but excessive dependence may affect independent thinking, problem-solving and human interaction. Younger students are still developing their cognitive abilities, making these concerns more important. The debate, therefore, is not only about banning AI, but also about whether schools should allow age-appropriate, supervised and responsible use.
Benefits of Generative AI for Younger Students
- Personalised Learning: AI can explain difficult concepts according to a child’s learning needs, speed and preferred way of learning.
- Interactive Learning: AI-enabled tools can use quizzes, stories, games and other activities to make classroom learning more engaging than rote learning.
- Creative Learning: Generative AI can help children create stories, artwork, music and software, even when they have limited technical skills.
- Teacher Resources: AI can help teachers prepare worksheets, assessments, quizzes and slide decks, reducing preparation time and supporting classroom teaching.
- Better Teaching Methods: AI can suggest different ways to explain a concept when a child does not understand the teacher’s first explanation.
- Learning Support: AI-based tools can record, transcribe and assess activities such as reading, helping students identify areas that need more practice.
- Accessibility: Generative AI can offer new ways for children with disabilities to interact with digital systems and participate in learning.
- Support for Teacher Shortages: India’s Central and State governments are commissioning AI pilot projects in government and rural schools, especially where quality teachers are in short supply.
Risks of Generative AI for Younger Students
- Loss of Independent Thinking: When AI directly completes homework, children may stop thinking for themselves and lose opportunities to develop reasoning skills.
- Loss of Learning Struggle: Ready-made answers can remove trial and error, logical thinking and the satisfaction of solving a problem independently.
- Over-Reliance on Technology: Frequent dependence on AI for thinking or synthesising ideas can make children rely on technology instead of developing their own mental abilities.
- Wrong Information: AI can produce false or made-up information, so teachers need to check its outputs before using them for classroom learning.
- Bias and Unfair Outputs: AI systems can contain algorithmic bias and may produce different results for users, including errors linked to language or accents.
- Harmful Content: Generative AI can produce misleading, inappropriate or dangerous content, while AI-generated deepfakes can also be used to target children.
- Privacy Risks: Children may share personal information while interacting with AI systems, raising concerns about how their data is collected and used.
- Influence on Children: Human-like AI systems can affect children’s perceptions, social behaviour and understanding, while biased outputs may also influence their views.
- Digital Inequality: Unequal access to AI can widen existing inequalities, leaving some children without the same opportunity to benefit from the technology.
Initiatives and Safeguards Taken So Far
- New York Moratorium: New York City announced a one-year moratorium on most generative AI tools for public school students up to Class 8 during the 2026–27 academic year.
- Snapchat Safety Measures: Snapchat introduced tools to detect references to violence, sexual content, drugs, child sexual abuse, bullying and hate speech in its AI chatbot.
- WEF AI for Children Toolkit: The World Economic Forum’s AI for Children toolkit provides guidance to technology companies and parents on the responsible use of AI for children.
- UNICEF Child-Centred AI Guidance: UNICEF’s updated guidance provides 10 requirements for protecting children while using AI:
- Regulation and oversight of AI systems used for children.
- Safety from harmful AI content and interactions.
- Data and privacy protection for children.
- Non-discrimination and fairness in AI systems.
- Transparency, explainability and accountability in AI decisions and outputs.
- Respect for human and child rights through responsible AI practices.
- Protection of children’s best interests, development and well-being.
- Inclusion of and for children in AI systems and their development.
- Preparation and skills to help children understand and use AI.

Way Forward
- Age-Appropriate Restrictions: Younger students need stronger restrictions on AI use because their cognitive abilities and learning habits are still developing.
- AI as a Learning Assistant: Schools should use AI to support teachers and students, but it should not replace teachers or direct human interaction.
- Protect Independent Learning: AI should not be used for tasks where the main objective is independent thinking, problem-solving or developing basic skills.
- Teach AI Literacy: Children should understand the benefits, limitations and risks of AI, rather than simply being kept away from it.
- Verify AI Outputs: Teachers and students should check AI-generated information because these systems can produce inaccurate or biased answers.
- Protect Children’s Data: Schools and AI providers should ensure that children’s personal data is collected and processed safely, with clear purposes.
- Strengthen Regulation: Governments should develop clear rules covering safety, privacy, fairness, transparency and accountability for AI used by children.
- Continue Research: Policymakers should study the long-term effects of generative AI on children and involve children, parents, teachers and other stakeholders in future planning.
Conclusion
Generative AI can improve learning and support teachers, but unrestricted use may weaken independent thinking, human interaction and child safety. A complete ban may not address children’s growing exposure to AI outside school. The better approach is age-appropriate and supervised use, with teachers remaining central, strong safeguards protecting children, and AI used mainly to support rather than replace human learning.
