About Sinai Peninsula
- Location: Sinai Peninsula is a triangle-shaped peninsula in northeastern Egypt that connects Asia and Africa.
- Boundaries: It is bounded by the Mediterranean Sea in the north,
- Israel and the Gaza Strip in the east,
- the Suez Canal and Gulf of Suez in the west, and
- the Red Sea and Gulf of Aqaba in the south and southeast.
- Climate: Sinai has an arid desert climate.
- Vegetation: Most vegetation is ephemeral, while perennial scrub survives on southern slopes and northern plateaus.
- Landscape: The peninsula has mountains, deserts, plateaus and coastal regions.
- The south has high mountains, while the north has a broad plateau sloping towards the Mediterranean.
- Highest Peak: Mount Catherine is the highest peak, with an elevation of 2,642 metres.
- Hydrology: The Sinai has no major rivers.
- Wadis (seasonal watercourses) and springs drain the mountains and form small oases.
- Wadi el Arish is one of the largest wadis.
- Flora: Succulents, halophytes, medicinal plants and fodder plants are found in different parts of the peninsula.
- Fauna: Animals include ibex, gazelles, sand foxes, leopards, jackals, hares, hedgehogs and moles.
- Falcons and eagles are indigenous, while quail, partridge and grouse are seasonal migrants.
- Historical Significance: It was occupied by Israeli forces in 1967 and returned to Egypt in 1982 under the terms of the 1979 peace treaty.
