Recently, NATO signed $700 mn Stinger Missile contract for defence boost.

About Stinger missile

1. About: The Stinger is a portable surface-to-air defense system that can be carried and fired by troops or mounted to a vehicle and used as short-range defense against aircraft.

2. Developed by: It was developed by the United States.

3. Purpose: Stinger missiles are primarily designed to engage and destroy aircraft, including helicopters and low-flying planes. They are instrumental in protecting troops and critical assets from airborne attacks.

4. Features:

i) Fire-and-Forget: Stinger missiles are known for their fire-and-forget capability, meaning once fired, they autonomously track and engage their target without requiring continuous guidance.

ii) Effectiveness: Stinger missiles are highly effective in swiftly neutralizing airborne threats, enhancing operational flexibility and response capabilities.

5. Deployment in India:

i) India has approved the acquisition of an Integrated Air Defence Weapon System (IADWS), which includes the deployment of Stinger missiles.

ii) This initiative aims to modernize India’s armed forces and bolster its air defense capabilities.

iii) The Integrated Air Defence Weapon System (IADWS), which includes Stinger missiles along with systems from India, Russia, and Israel.

iv) It aims to create a strong, multi-layered missile defense system over Delhi’s National Capital Territory (NCT). This setup is essential for protecting against diverse aerial threats.
