  1. Thailand has named a baby dugong found washed ashore as Yamil.The name means handsome man of the sea in the Yawi language.
  2. Dugong or Sea Cow is a sea-grass eating mammal which is found in waters of as many as 37 countries.The dugong has been hunted for thousands of years for its meat and oil.
  3. The International Union of Conservation for Nature(IUCN) has listed the dugongs as Vulnerable as say they are at a high risk of extinction.
  4. Despite being legally protected in many countries,the main causes of population decline remain anthropogenic which includes fishing-related fatalities,habitat degradation and hunting.
