News: Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that India and France will jointly launch the TRISHNA satellite next year for global water and food security.

  • TRISHNA (Thermal Infra-Red Imaging Satellite for High-resolution Natural Resource Assessment) is a joint mission of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the French Space Agency CNES for high-resolution monitoring of Earth’s surface temperature, vegetation health, and water cycle dynamics.
  • Schedule: It is scheduled to be jointly launched by India and France in 2027.
  • Objective: The mission aims to monitor Earth’s surface temperature, energy and water budgets, vegetation health, and water cycle dynamics to address water and food security challenges and support efficient water resource management.
  • Key Aspects:
    • Orbit: The satellite will operate in a sun-synchronous orbit at an altitude of 761 km with a local time of 12:30 PM at the equator.
    • Life Span: The mission is designed for an operational life of 5 years.
    • Resolution: The satellite will provide a spatial resolution of 57 m for land and coastal areas and 1 km for oceanic and polar regions.
  • Key Payloads:
    • Thermal Infra-Red (TIR): This CNES-provided payload has a four-channel long-wave infrared imaging sensor for high-resolution surface temperature and emissivity mapping.
    • VNIR-SWIR (Visible–Near Infra-Red–Short Wave Infra-Red): This ISRO-developed payload contains seven spectral bands and is used to study how the Earth’s surface reflects sunlight.
      • It helps generate important information on vegetation, land surface conditions, and radiation-related variables required for monitoring natural resources and the Earth’s energy balance.
  • Global Contributions: TRISHNA’s data will support global initiatives such as GEOGLAM for agricultural monitoring, the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and Global Water Watch.
      • The mission’s outputs will also serve as Essential Agricultural Variables (EAVs) and Essential Climate Variables (ECVs) for the global community.
