Why in the news?

The two stealth frigates being built in Russia for the Indian Navy are to be delivered soon.

i) The first ship is named Tushil. It is ready and will be delivered by September.

ii) The second ship is named Tamal. It is expected to be delivered by February 2025.

iii) The Indian Navy currently operates six of these frigates, each weighing around 4,000 tonnes.

Agreement for Frigates between India and Russia

i) In October 2016, India and Russia signed an agreement for four stealth frigates. Two frigates are to be directly imported from Russia. Two frigates will be manufactured locally by Goa Shipyard Ltd. (GSL).

ii) A $1-billion deal was signed for the two frigates to be directly purchased from Russia.

iii) In November 2018, GSL signed a $500-million deal with Rosoboronexport of Russia for materials, design, and specialist assistance to manufacture the two frigates locally.

iv) The Indian Defence Ministry and GSL finalized the contract in January 2019. All four ships are powered by engines from Zorya-Mashproekt of Ukraine.
