  • UMMID stands for Unique Methods of Management of Inherited Disorders.
  • Initiated by: It is a national initiative led by the Department of Biotechnology to tackle inherited genetic disorders.
  • Launch year: It was launched in 2019.
  • It is India’s first comprehensive national effort to address inherited genetic disorders through an integrated approach encompassing diagnosis, counselling, prevention, training and public health awareness.
  • Aims: It aims
    • to establish National Inherited Diseases Administration (NIDAN) Kendras to provide counselling, prenatal testing and diagnosis, management, and multidisciplinary care in Government Hospitals where the influx of patients is higher,
    • to produce skilled clinicians in Human Genetics, and
    • to undertake screening of pregnant women and newborn babies for inherited genetic diseases in hospitals in aspirational districts.
  • Features:
    • It establishes a national framework integrating genetic diagnostics, prenatal and newborn screening, genetic counselling, clinician capacity-building and community outreach under a unified public health model.
    • Through nationwide collaborations, capacity building, advanced diagnostics, and awareness generation, it aspires to make quality genetic healthcare more accessible and inclusive for all.
  • Achievement: It has helped establish nearly 30 NIDAN kendras for advanced diagnostics and counselling, ensuring that advanced genomic healthcare reaches beyond metropolitan centres.
