What are the main features of the Uttar Pradesh Millets Revival Programme?

The Uttar Pradesh Millets Revival Programme was approved by the State Cabinet in 2023 to promote millet production, processing, and consumption. It aims to strengthen the millet value chain while improving farmers’ income and ensuring nutritional security.

Main features:

  1. a)The program will run till 2026-27 and the government has earmarked ₹186.26 crore for it; b) all 75 districts will be covered under the program, with the Department of Horticulture and Food Processing serving as the nodal department.
  2. a)To promote millet farming, the government will distribute free mini-kits of millet seeds for four years; b) beneficiaries will include registered farmers or Kisan Samman Nidhi recipients, with preference given to women and SC/ST farmers for inclusive agricultural
  3. a) With the Millet Revival Program, Uttar Pradesh seeks to restore traditional millet cultivation (Shree Anna) and strengthen rural livelihoods; b) it entails collaboration with agricultural universities and research institutions to develop high-yield millet varieties and improve farming techniques.
  4. a)The program also supports millet processing, packaging, and marketing through financial assistance, ensuring value addition and increased brand value; b) It intends to connect millet farmers with food processing industries and retail chains, ensuring better price recovery.
  5. a) Financial and technical support will be provided to startups and small businesses focused on millet-based products. This will foster innovation and employment opportunities in the sector; a) under the programme, efforts will be made to position Uttar Pradesh as a key player in millet exports by improving quality standards, branding, and facilitating connections with international markets.
  6. The Government will also undertake awareness campaigns to educate people about the health benefits of millets and promote their inclusion in daily diets.

Millet Revival Program will help Uttar Pradesh to not only promote sustainable agriculture but will also drive nutritional diversity. This will help the state improve its overall health indicators and build a strong human capital to achieve the goal of a $1tn economy by 2029.
