- Japan has officially resumed commercial whaling today (July 1) after more than 30 years. However, during the time period Japan continued whale hunting for scientific purposes.
- In December 2018, Japan had announced that it would withdraw from the International Whaling Commission (IWC) moratorium on whale hunting.
- Japan has Iceland and Norway as the only nations to allow commercial whaling despite the IWC moratorium.
- Hunting will reportedly be limited to Japan’s territorial sea and exclusive economic zone. Whales living near Japan include Minke and Bryde’s whales. These whales are considered of “least concern” by the IUCN Red List
- The International Whaling Commission (IWC) is the global body charged with the conservation of whales and the management of whaling. It was established in 1946. It is headquartered in Impington, United Kingdom.
