News: Mission Mausam’s aim to improve weather forecasting and manage certain weather events would require improvements in the cloud physics research. In this direction, a cloud chamber will be established at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, Pune.

1. Cloud Chamber: It is an enclosure in which water vapour, aerosols etc. are injected. With conducive humidity and temperature conditions, a cloud can develop inside the enclosure. It is also known as Wilson Chamber.

2. It would enable scientists to study the seed particles that form cloud droplets or ice particles.

3. Mission Mausam: It is a multi-faceted and transformative initiative that seeks to enhance country’s weather and climate observations, understanding, modelling and forecasting.

4. It has been allocated a budgetary outlay of 2000 crore over two years.

5. The mission is expected to benefit numerous sectors like agriculture, disaster management, aviation, defence, water resources etc.

6. With Mission Mausam, India is building a cloud chamber with convection properties to study Indian monsoon clouds.
