News: The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has declared 2024 as the warmest year on record, according to six international datasets.

About World Meteorological Organization (WMO)

  • It is a key UN specialized agency dedicated to meteorology, operational hydrology, and related geophysical sciences.
  • Headquarters: Geneva, Switzerland.
  • History & Origin:
    • Founded in 1950: As a specialized agency of the UN for meteorology, climate, hydrology, and related fields.
    • Originated from the International Meteorological Organization (IMO) which was established in 1873, which laid the foundation for WMO’s creation.
  • Main Goals:
    • International Cooperation: Facilitate collaboration in meteorology, weather, climate, hydrology, and environmental fields.
    • Exchange of Information: Promote the sharing of data, technologies, and expertise to better understand the Earth’s atmosphere and water resources.

Governance Structure:

  • World Meteorological Congress:
    • The supreme body of WMO, consisting of representatives from all member countries.
    • Meets at least every four years to set policies and adopt regulations.
  • Executive Council: A 36-member body that implements WMO’s policies and meets annually.
  • Secretariat:
    • Managed by the Secretary-General, who is appointed by the Congress for a four-year term.
    • The Secretariat is the administrative center for WMO.
  • Members: WMO has 193 Members, including 187 Member States and 6 Territories, each with their own meteorological services.
