Israel targets Hezbollah in central Beirut, fires on UN peacekeepers

News: Israel airstrike that targeted at least one senior Hezbollah figure in central Beirut led to killing of two people and injuring UN peacekeepers.

1. Hezbollah: It is a Lebanon bases Shiite Muslim political and militant organization.

2. It was established in 1982, as a response to Israeli occupation of southern Lebanon.

3. Iran provides significant military, financial and logistics support to the Hezbollah, which remains an important non state actor in the politics of West Asia.

4. United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL): It was established in 1978 by United Nations Security Council to confirm Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon and ensure peace and stability in Lebanon.

5. It has a strength of more than 10,000 troops drawn from 50 countries, including India.
