News: India’s successful electrification journey, which saw the country achieve 100% electricity access by 2021, is now being analyzed as a model for accelerating energy access in Africa under Mission 300.
About Mission 300
- Mission 300 is a large-scale initiative led by the World Bank and the African Development Bank to provide electricity access to 300 million people in Sub-Saharan Africa by 2030.
- Aim: The initiative aims to speed up electrification in Sub-Saharan Africa while ensuring that the shift to cleaner and more diverse energy sources meets rising demand, drives economic growth, and generates employment opportunities.
- Efforts also emphasize investments in generation, transmission, distribution, regional interconnection, and sector reforms to enhance the quality, reliability, and affordability of the power supply.
- Other key partners– Rockefeller Foundation, Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP), Sustainable Energy for All (SE4ALL), and Energy Sector Management Assistance Program (ESMAP).
Key Components of Mission 300
- Expanding Electricity Access: Enhancing the power grid and increasing connections in underserved regions.
- Off-Grid Solutions: Deploying mini-grids and standalone solar systems to electrify remote communities.
- Community Involvement: Ensuring active participation of local communities in the design and implementation of all World Bank Group-supported Mission 300 projects.
