  • Viatina-19 belongs to the Nelore breed, also known as Ongole.
  • It originated in Prakasam district, Andhra Pradesh, India and was first introduced to Brazil in the 1800s.
  • The breed is well known for its tropical climate adaptability and disease resistance.
  • It weighs approximately 1,101 kg, twice the average weight of other Nelore cows.
  • It is characterised by gorgeous white fur, loose skin, and a prominent hump on her shoulders.
    • These features make this animal impressive both biologically and aesthetically.
    • It can withstand high temperatures due to its ability to regulate body temperature.
  • Viatina-19 possesses exceptional genetics, distinct from cattle bred for the dairy or meat industry. Its embryos are exported worldwide.
  • In India, the Ongole breed is at risk of extinction, with its population dropping from 15 lakh in 1944 to 6.34 lakh in the 2019 Livestock Census.
  • Cattle prices are relatively low in India with cows costing around Rs 1 lakh and prized bulls ranging from Rs 10 to 15 lakh.
