Congratulations to the successful candidates.

What is the UPSC Reserve List?

After the final result of the Civil Services Examination is declared, UPSC also prepares a “reserve list” of candidates just below the main merit list. This reserve list includes candidates who performed well but did not make it into the main list because of limited vacancies.

Why is a Reserve List Maintained?

Sometimes, candidates who are selected in the main list don’t join (due to better service allocation, personal reasons, or joining other exams like IFS, IES, etc.).  In such cases, the government (Department of Personnel and Training – DoPT) can request UPSC to recommend additional candidates from the reserve list to fill up those unfilled vacancies.

The reserve list is usually published a few months after the main result, once the DoPT confirms how many vacancies remain unfilled.
