  • Ghoomar or ghumar is a traditional folk dance of Rajasthan.
  • Meaning of the name: The name comes from the word “ghoomna,” which means to twirl or spin.
  • Origin: It originally began as a folk dance of the Bhil tribe to worship Goddess Sarasvati and was later adopted by other communities in Rajasthan.
  • Performance:
    • It is performed by women in flowing, vibrant skirts called ghaghara.
    • It is characterized by graceful twirling (ghoomna) and moving in and out of a large circle.
  • Occasions: It is performed during celebrations such as weddings, festivals like Teej and Gangaur, and other auspicious events.
  • Instruments: It is accompanied by traditional folk music, often featuring the Dhol (drum), Nagada, Shehnai, and Harmonium.
  • Cultural Significance: In Rajasthani culture, Ghoomar symbolizes joy, celebration, femininity, and communal harmony.
