  • It is a 1020 MW run-of-the-river hydroelectric power project in Bhutan.
  • Developed by: It is developed by the Punatsangchhu II Hydroelectric Project Authority under an Inter-Government Agreement between Bhutan and India.

    • Infrastructure Details: The project includes a 91 m-high dam and diversion tunnel of 1118 cubic mt per second.
      • It has an underground powerhouse 15 km downstream at Kamechu with six 170 MW turbines, increasing capacity by 40% to over 3500 MW.
    • Institutional Mechanism: The PHPA-II is an autonomous body established by Bhutan and India for project implementation.
    • Technical Coordination: A Technical Coordination Committee (TCC) ensures coordination among management, consultants, and experts for timely technical decisions.

  • Capacity & Type: It is a 1.2 GW run-of-the-river hydroelectric project.
  • Location: It is located in Wangdue Phodrang district on the left bank of Punatsangchhu River.
  • Funding Pattern: It is funded by India with 40% grant and 60% loan at 10% interest, repayable in 30 installments.
  • Infrastructure Details: It includes a 130 m-high and 239 m-long concrete gravity dam, two diversion tunnels, and an underground powerhouse with six 200 MW turbines.
