- Origin: The day marks the successful nuclear tests conducted at Pokhran on May 11, 1998, which showcased India’s scientific excellence and capabilities.
- Aim: The celebration aims to encourage innovation, promote indigenous technologies, support research, and honour innovators contributing to national development.
- Organizing Body: It is primarily organised by the Technology Development Board, a statutory body under the Department of Science and Technology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India.
- Theme 2026: The theme for this year is ‘Responsible Innovation for Inclusive Growth’.

- Recognition of Scientists: The day honours scientists and innovators who contributed to India’s technological progress and national pride.
