News: Jharkhand’s Bhagaiya silk, Kuchai silk, Munda jewellery, and bamboo craft products have received Geographical Indication (GI) tag recognition.

About GI Tag Products from Jharkhand

1. Bhagaiya Silk:

  • Identity: Bhagaiya silk is a hand-spun silk textile of Jharkhand.
  • Community Association: It is mainly woven by Santhal tribal women.
  • Uniqueness: The silk is deeply rooted in indigenous craftsmanship and local knowledge systems and represents generations of traditional skills preserved within rural communities.

2. Kuchai Silk:

  • Identity: Kuchai silk is a traditional tussar silk of Jharkhand.
  • Origin: The silk tradition originated in the village of Kuchai in Seraikela-Kharsawan and later spread across Jharkhand.
  • Uniqueness: It is produced through wild Tussar silk cultivation using tussar silkworms reared on Asan and Arjun trees.

3. Munda Jewellery:

  • Tribal Craftsmanship: Munda jewellery is a distinctive artistic tradition of the Munda tribal community.
  • Uniqueness: It is characterised by unique geometric patterns, nature-inspired motifs, and distinctive craftsmanship.

4. Jharkhand Bamboo Craft:

  • Local Resource: The craft is made from locally available bamboo and produces utility and decorative items.
  • Community Association: The craft is primarily practiced by indigenous tribes such as the Santhal, Ho, Gond, and Pahariya
  • Sustainable Livelihood: It supports rural artisans and promotes bamboo-based entrepreneurship.

About GI Tag

  • Geographical Indication (GI) tag: It  is an official intellectual property sign used on products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities, characteristics, or a reputation linked to that place of origin.
  • GI is governed under the Agreement on TRIPS at the World Trade Organisation (WTO).
  • In India, GI registrations are governed by the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999.
