  • Location: Volcán de Fuego is located in Guatemala near the historic city of Antigua.
  • Meaning: It means “Volcano of Fire” in Spanish.
  • Type of Volcano: It is a young basaltic stratovolcano with an open-vent system, which allows gas and magma to escape through regular eruptions.
  • Key Aspects:
    • Elevation: The volcano stands 3,763 m (12,346 feet) above sea level and is located between Acatenango and Agua volcanoes.
    • Geological Setting: It is part of the Central American Volcanic Arc and lies along the boundary of the Cocos Plate and the Caribbean Plate.
    • Eruption Pattern: It frequently produces small eruptions and is known for vulcanian activity, which is sometimes accompanied by pyroclastic flows.
    • Historical Activity: It has erupted more than 60 times over the last 500 years.
      • The 2018 eruption killed 194 people, left 234 missing, and the volcano has continued to produce small eruptions several times each day.
