News: India launched its first ‘Easy Connect’ flight under the Hub-and-Spoke Aviation Model from Varanasi to New Delhi.

  • Hub-and-Spoke Aviation Model is an aviation model that connects smaller airports, called spokes, with major airports, called hubs, to enable seamless international travel.
    • The Spokes: The spoke airports serve as the starting point of the international journey, where passengers complete check-in, immigration and customs formalities before flying to a designated Indian hub airport.
    • The Hub: The hub airport receives passengers from the spoke airports and allows them to board their onward international flight without repeating departure formalities.
  • Introduced by: Hub-and-Spoke Aviation Model was introduced by the Ministry of Civil Aviation.
  • Aim: The model aims to make India the preferred aviation hub for Indian passengers by 2030 and for the world by 2047 while improving connectivity from Tier-II and Tier-III cities.
  • Key Features: 
    • Decentralized Processing: Passengers complete check-in, immigration and customs formalities at the spoke airport, where they receive separate ‘D’ (Domestic) and ‘I’ (International) boarding passes before beginning their international journey.
    • Seamless International Transit: Passengers are checked in to their final international destination, their baggage is transferred automatically, and they directly board their onward international flight at the hub airport without repeating departure formalities.

About First ‘Easy Connect’ Flight

  • Launch: India launched its first ‘Easy Connect’ flight under the Hub-and-Spoke Aviation Model from Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport, Varanasi, to New Delhi.
  • Operator: The inaugural ‘Easy Connect’ flight is operated by Air India.
