News: India became the fourth largest regasification market in 2025 after surpassing Spain, according to the International Gas Union’s World LNG Report 2026.

  • World LNG Report is an annual report published by the International Gas Union (IGU) that presents global trends, trade, investment, capacity and future outlook of the liquefied natural gas (LNG) sector.
  • Key Findings of 2026 Report
    • India:
      • Global Ranking: India added 52.5 mtpa of regasification capacity across eight terminals and became the fourth largest regasification market in 2025.
      • Terminal Development: India commissioned the Chhara LNG terminal and expanded the Dabhol LNG terminal, increasing its capacity from 2.9 mtpa to 5 mtpa with year-round operations.
      • Infrastructure Expansion: India has four LNG projects under construction, which are expected to add 11.3 mtpaof regasification capacity by 2028.
      • Demand Outlook: The International Energy Agency projected that India’s natural gas consumption will increase by nearly 60% by 2030 due to city gas distribution, industrial demand and power generation.
      • Capacity Utilisation: India’s LNG regasification utilisation declined from 58% in 2024 to about 47% in 2025 because of weaker summer LNG imports and increased infrastructure.
    • Global Finding:
      • Record LNG Trade: Global LNG trade reached a record 437 million tonnes in 2025, increasing by 6.3%, which was the strongest growth since 2022.
      • Top Exporters: The United States remained the world’s largest LNG exporter with 110.7 million tonnes, followed by Qatar (81.5 million tonnes) and Australia (80.3 million tonnes).
      • Top Importer: China remained the world’s largest LNG importer with 69.8 million tonnes.
