About Aldrin Pesticide
- Aldrin is a highly toxic, synthetic organochlorine insecticide that belongs to the cyclodiene group of chemicals.
- Key Features
- Toxicity: Aldrin can kill birds, fish, humans, and many insect pests including termites, grasshoppers, and corn rootworm.
- Exposure: Humans are mostly exposed through dairy products and animal meats.
- Studies in India indicate an average daily intake of 19 micrograms of aldrin and dieldrin per person.
- Persistence: It is extremely toxic, difficult to metabolize, and non-biodegradable, allowing it to persist in the environment and contribute to bioaccumulation and biomagnification.
- Legal Status:
- The Stockholm Convention (2001) lists Aldrin under Annex A (Elimination) as one of the original “Dirty Dozen” hazardous chemicals.
- In India, its manufacture, import, and use are completely banned, and Persistent Organic Pollutants are regulated under the Regulation of Persistent Organic Pollutants Rules, 2018, notified under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986.
