News: The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) informed the National Green Tribunal (NGT) about expanded Sahibi River monitoring under the Delhi-Yamuna Drain Monitoring Programme.
About Sahibi River

- The Sahibi River is also called the Sabi River.
- Origin: It originated from the eastern slopes of the Saiwar Protected Forest hills in Sikar district, Rajasthan.
- Nature: It is an ephemeral river because it flows mainly during the monsoon season and remains dry for the rest of the year.
- Flows through : It flows through Rajasthan, Haryana and Delhi before joining the Yamuna at Wazirabad.
- Major Tributaries: It’s major tributaries includes the Sota branch, the Krishnawati stream, Dohan river and the Indori river.
- Tributary of: It meets the Najafgarh drain in Delhi before joining the Yamuna River.
- Length: It flows for 300 km of which 157 km is in Rajasthan, 100 km is in Haryana and 40 km in Delhi.
- Environmental Concern: After entering Delhi, the Sahibi River becomes the Najafgarh drain, which carries pollution from Haryana and waste from Delhi’s colonies and industries.
- Historical Significance: It is often associated with the ancient Drishadvati river mentioned in the Rigveda.
- Archaeological sites from the Indus Valley Civilization have been found along the banks of the Sahibi and its tributaries.
- Revival Efforts: Following NGT directions, Rajasthan is preparing a Detailed Project Report (DPR), while Haryana has conducted surveys and is trying to reclaim existing stretches.
