  • It is an indigenously developed hybrid maize seed designed to produce high-expansion popcorn without genetic modification.
  • Developed by: The seed was developed through a collaboration between the Indian Council of Agricultural Research–Indian Institute of Maize Research (ICAR-IIMR) and Gourmet Popcornica, an Indian enterprise.
  • Hybrid Varieties: The research has produced two hybrid varieties – Krisna459 and Godari234.
  • Key Features:
    • Cross-breeding: The hybrids are developed through conventional cross-breeding methods.
    • Non-GMO Nature: They do not contain artificially inserted foreign genetic traits.
      • This makes them suitable for global food processing sectors that mandate non-GMO ingredients.
    • Indigenous Hybrid Technology: The seed provides an Indian alternative to imported hybrid seed technology for high-quality popcorn maize and can help reduce India’s dependence on such imports.
