About Lake Ontario

• Location: Lake Ontario is located in North America.
  • It is bounded by Ontario (Canada) to the north and New York (U.S.A) to the south.
• It situated on the US-Canada border.
• It is smallest and most easterly of the Great Lakes of North America. 
  • It is part of the Great Lakes system, along with Lake Superior, Michigan, Huron and Erie.
• It is roughly elliptical.
• Feeding river: The main feeder of the Lake is the Niagara River.
  • Other rivers include the Genesee, Oswego, Black rivers and Trent River. 
• The lakes system holds about 90% of the freshwater in the U.S.A and approximately 20% of the world’s freshwater supply.
  • Forty million people across the two countries depend on it for clean drinking water.
• Current issue: U.S.A President Donald Trump recently signed an executive order to rename Lake Ontario as “Lake America”.
  • The name change will apply to how the US officially refers to the lake, but it will not affect how Canada or the rest of the world choose to call it.
  • No single global organisation is tasked with ensuring uniformity among names of water bodies, and the decision to use a certain name is often based on historical precedent.
