News: India’s Vice President, C. P. Radhakrishnan, has released the “Mission Rangeen Machhli 2031” Strategic Action Plan for Ornamental Fisheries Development at Agatti, Lakshadweep.
About Mission Rangeen Machhli 2031
- Mission Rangeen Machhli 2031 is a Strategic Action Plan for Ornamental Fisheries Development aimed at organising India’s ornamental fisheries sector.
- Nodal Ministry: It is being organized by the Department of Fisheries, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying, Government of India.
- Objective: Its objective is to provide a uniform and scientific framework for managing ornamental fisheries and improving production, product quality, biosecurity, certification and market access.
- Key Features:
- Uniform framework: It will establish common practices for scientific management, biosecurity, quality assurance and regulatory compliance across the ornamental fisheries value chain.
- Standardised practices: Standard Operating Procedures will cover broodstock management, breeding, hatchery operations, quarantine, fish health, traceability, handling, transportation and trade.
- Better market opportunities: The plan will improve product quality and biosecurity standards, while supporting certification and access to domestic and international markets.
- Sustainable growth: It will support an organised and globally competitive ornamental fisheries sector, creating livelihood opportunities while conserving marine ecosystems.
- India’s fisheries sector supports about 50 lakh fishers and exported seafood worth ₹73,890 crore in FY 2025-26.
