News: The United States and Indonesia launched Super Garuda Shield 2026, the first exercise since announcing a new defence partnership this year.

  • Super Garuda Shield is an annual multilateral joint military exercise between Indonesia, the United States and partner countries.
  • Origin: It began in 2006 as the bilateral Garuda Shield between the United States and Indonesia.
    • In 2022, “Super” was added to the exercise title, and the exercise expanded to include additional partner nations.
  • Host: The Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) host the exercise.
    • The exercise is co-led by the United States Indo-Pacific Command.
  • Participants: The United States, Indonesia and 13 additional partner nations, including Japan, South Korea, Australia and Canada, participate in the exercise.
  • Observer: Eight nations are participating as observers.
    • India participating as an observer for the first time.
  • Key Features of Super Garuda Shield 2026
    • Location: The exercise is conducted in Bandung, Baturaja, Lampung and North Kalimantan in Indonesia.
    • The exercise includes airborne operations, missile firing, amphibious exercises, cyber exercises and naval manoeuvres across different military domains.
    • Partner forces will conduct infiltration drills and jungle training in Indonesia’s varied terrain.
    • Maritime Training: The United States Navy and Coast Guard will conduct coordinated maritime training with the Indonesian Navy (TNI-AL) to strengthen interoperability at sea.
    • Humanitarian Assistance: The exercise also includes humanitarian disaster relief efforts to strengthen response capabilities during natural disasters and wildfires.
