- Bail Pola Festival is a traditional festival that celebrates the bond between farmers and their bulls and expresses gratitude for their agricultural service.
- It is also known as Pola Amavasya, Kushopatini Amavasya and Pithori Amavasya.
- Region: It is predominantly celebrated in Maharashtra.
- It is also observed in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka and Telangana.
- Timing: It is celebrated on the Amavasya of the Shravan month, generally during the August–September period.
- Key Features of Bail Pola Festival
- Agricultural Significance: The festival recognizes the vital role of bulls and oxen in ploughing fields, preparing land and supporting farmers’ livelihoods.
- Rituals and Worship: Farmers wash the cattle, give them oil massages, decorate them with flowers, ribbons and bells, and perform their puja and aarti.
- Hindu faith: The festival is linked with the belief that young Lord Krishna killed the demon Polasur on this day.
- Another tradition connects it with Lord Shiva and his bull Nandi.
