  • Location: Willingdon Island is a man-made island in the city of Kochi, Kerala.
    • It is surrounded by the backwaters and the Arabian Sea
  • It is one of the largest man-made islands in India.
  • Named after: It is named after the erstwhile Viceroy, Lord Willington.
  • Designed by: It is designed and created by the harbour engineer Sir Robert Bristow.
    • It was formed using mud and materials dredged from Vembanad Lake.
  • Area: It is spread over about 775 acres.
  • Important commercial and maritime hub:
    • It is connected to the mainland by the Venduruthy Bridge and plays a major role in Kochi’s trade and transport.
    • It is home to the Port of Kochi, Kochi Naval Base, Central Institute of Fisheries Technology, and several hotels.
  • Prominent institutions and facilities: It houses the headquarters of the Southern Naval Command of the Indian Navy, the Central Institute of Fisheries Technology, and the Port of Kochi.
