News: India will join “Partners for Multilateralism” (P4M) Initiative supporting UN-based multilateralism over “superpower” politics.
About “Partners for Multilateralism” (P4M) Initiative
- “Partners for Multilateralism” (P4M) Initiative is a new, non-superpower global diplomatic grouping to reform global institutions and promote collective action.
- The idea has been coined at Partners for Multilateralism Summit held in New York City on 21st September 2026.
- Founded by: It has been founded by leaders of the European Union, Brazil, Kenya and Canada.
- Aim: It aims to support the reinvigoration and reform of the United Nations and other multilateral organizations and make them more representative, legitimate, effective and trusted.
- Purpose: It purpose is to create a flexible, open framework for countries from different regions and political traditions that are willing to work across divides, to build coalitions
for reform and to translate shared principles into practical action.” - P4M grouping believes that the “international community must rediscover the extraordinary potential of collective action”.
- It would not create another exclusive bloc or international bureaucracy.
- Reason behind its formation: Rising geopolitical tensions, conflicts, climate change and AI are putting pressure on global institutions.
- It has been reaffirmed that the multilateral system should be renewed and reformed to be more effective, representative, inclusive and fit for purpose.
- There is pressing need to strengthen multilateralism, promote peace and achieve inclusive prosperity through high-level discussions.
