  • Location: India’s First Port-based e-Methanol Plant will be established at Deendayal Port Authority (DPA), Kandla, Gujarat.
  • Initiative By: The project is a joint initiative of Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) and Assam Petro-Chemicals Ltd (APCL).
  • Funding: The project involves a total investment of ₹2,300 crore, with DPA and APCL contributing in a 76:24 ratio.
  • Key Features:
    • Two Phases: The first phase will add 50 tonnes per day at ₹1,200 crore, while the second will add 100 tonnes per day at ₹1,100 crore.
    • Green Fuel Supply: The e-methanol will support vessels operating on the Asia-Europe International Trade Corridor.
    • Green-Fuel Ecosystem: The project will support transportation, storage and supply infrastructure around Kandla.
    • Production Cost: Green methanol is expected to cost about US$750 per tonne, compared with a global rate of about US$1,300.

About e-Methanol

  • Methanol is a chemical compound used as a fuel and in industrial applications.
  • E-methanol is a low-carbon form of methanol produced using renewable energy and captured or recycled CO₂.
  • Process of Production:
    • Green Hydrogen Generation: Renewable electricity is used to split water (H₂O) into hydrogen and oxygen through electrolysis.
    • CO₂ Capture: CO₂ is captured from industrial sources or directly from the air and used as an input for production.
    • Methanol Synthesis: Green hydrogen and captured CO₂ are combined in a catalytic reactor under pressure to produce methanol with minimal by-products.
  • Applications: E-methanol can be used as a low-carbon fuel in shipping and in heavy industry and chemical manufacturing.
