  • Central Asian Flyway Digital Hub is a collaborative digital platform for the conservation of migratory birds.
  • Launched by: It has been launched by Central Asian Conservation Network (CACN).
  • Aim: Its aim is to strengthen the sharing of knowledge and information for the conservation of migratory birds across the Central Asian Flyway (CAF).
  • Objective: It will bring together information on migratory bird species, important flyway sites, conservation projects, educational resources and opportunities for participation.
    • It will also provide dedicated portals for recording bird collisions and sightings of marked birds.
  • Features of the Central Asian Flyway Digital Hub:
    • Collection of educational and awareness materials: Collection of educational and awareness materials will be designed to make the story of migratory birds accessible to children, teachers, communities, birdwatchers and the wider public.
      • The resources include publications, educational materials and children’s stories that explain migration, the importance of wetlands and other habitats, and the threats faced by migratory birds.
    • Bird Collision Reporting Portal: The Digital hub also include a Bird Collision Reporting Portal. It has following key features:
      • Online Reporting: The portal enables users to record bird deaths and injuries caused by collisions with power lines, wind turbines and other infrastructure.
      • Centralized Data Sharing: It brings together scattered observations from individuals, organisations, field records and research studies on a common platform, providing a broader regional picture of bird collisions across the flyway.
      • Conservation and Risk Assessment: It helps identify collision hotspots, understand regional risks, strengthen scientific evidence and guide further investigations and targeted conservation action.
    • Ringing and Resighting Portal: It has following key features:
      • Online Recording: The portal provides a platform for recording observations of birds carrying metal rings, colour rings, leg flags, neck bands and other identifying marks.
      • Migration Tracking and Data Sharing: It helps to track bird movements and migration routes by linking observations from breeding, stopover and non-breeding areas across different countries.
    • It will also support initiatives that connect people and information across the flyway such as Flyway Connect.

  • Flyway Connect is a citizen science and bird conservation initiative.
  • Launched by: It has been launched by the Central Asian Conservation Network (CACN) in close partnership with Bird Count India.
  • Aim: It aims to strengthen connections between birdwatchers, researchers and conservation practitioners and improve the sharing of information on satellite tagged migratory birds and their movements.

About Central Asian Flyway (CAF)

  • The Central Asian Flyway (CAF) is a vast migratory corridor stretching across 30 countries of North, Central and South Asia and the Trans-Caucasus, connecting the Arctic and Indian Oceans.
  • It connects breeding, stopover and non-breeding (northern wintering) areas across the region. More than 600 bird species use the flyway.
  • India remains in the core central region of the Central Asian Flyway (CAF) and holds some crucial important wintering population of water bird species
