  • The Yenisei river is one of the major Siberian rivers.
  • Origin: It is formed by the confluence of the Great Yenisei and Little Yenisei rivers at Kyzyl in Russia.
    • The Great Yenisei rises in the Eastern Sayan Mountains, while the Little Yenisei rises in Mongolia.
  • Course: It flows mainly northwards through Russia and empties into the Kara Sea, part of the Arctic Ocean.
  • Basin: Its basin is the fifth largest in the world, and it is the largest among the major Siberian rivers.
  • Major Tributaries: The Angara, Stony Tunguska and Lower Tunguska are important tributaries that contribute substantially to the river’s flow.
  • Ecological Significance: Its waters support fishes such as Siberian sturgeon, sterlet and Arctic char.
    • Its lower reaches and delta also provide habitats for ducks, geese, swans and muskrats.
    • The upper basin is connected to Lake Baikal, the world’s deepest and oldest lake.
  • Environmental Pollution: Industrial activities and river regulation contribute to pollution, making the lower reaches among the most polluted Arctic river sections.
