News: Tree-planting drives in India have highlighted concerns about planting trees in unsuitable ecosystems and ignoring the value of naturally open ecosystems.
About Barren-land Fallacy

- Barren-land Fallacy: It is the belief that land without tree cover is ecologically deficient and should evolve or be converted into a forest.
- Consequences of the Fallacy:
- Damage to Open Ecosystems: Grasslands, savannas, scrublands, wetlands, and deserts may be wrongly treated as degraded land, even though they are complete ecosystems.
- Loss of Biodiversity: Many native plants, birds, and animals depend on open spaces for their survival.
- Stress on Water Resources: Treating naturally open ecosystems as degraded land and planting unsuitable trees can increase pressure on water resources.
- For example, planting eucalyptus trees, which draw a lot of water, in water-stressed areas can further increase this pressure.
- True restoration means:
- Protecting the Native Ecosystem: Identifying and preserving the natural ecosystem that belongs in that specific location (whether it is a forest, wetland, or grassland).
- Restoring Natural Processes: Allowing the land to recover its natural balance rather than forcing artificial changes on it.
