News: Balrampur Chini Mills, one of India’s largest integrated sugar companies, has announced a ₹2,000 crore investment to establish the country’s first bioplastics factory.
About Bioplastic

1. Bioplastics are plastics made from plant-based materials such as corn, wheat, sugarcane, or other biological sources instead of petroleum.
2. These materials are biodegradable and compostable. Biodegradable plastics are easy to recycle and are non-toxic which results in low carbon footprint.
3. There are several types of Bioplastic some of which are mentioned below
- Polylactic Acid (PLA): Made from plant sugars like corn or sugarcane, PLA is commonly used in packaging, disposable cutlery, and textiles.
- Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA): Produced by microorganisms, PHA is used in packaging, medical products, and agricultural films.
- Starch-based Bioplastics: Made from starch extracted from crops like potatoes or corn, these bioplastics are used in packaging, disposable items, and agricultural applications.
