About Bundelkhand Region
- Bundelkhand is a semi-arid plateau region spread across southern Uttar Pradesh and northern Madhya Pradesh.
- The region is historically associated with the Bundela Rajput dynasty.
- Location: The region lies between the Yamuna and Narmada river systems and forms part of the Central Highlands.
- Districts Covered: It comprises 13 districts – seven in Uttar Pradesh and six in Madhya Pradesh.
- Key Features of Bundelkhand Region
- Geology: The region lies on the Bundelkhand Granite Massif, with ancient granite, gneiss and quartzite formations.
- Its hard-rock geology prevents rainwater infiltration, causing very low groundwater storage.
- Climate: Bundelkhand has a semi-arid climate, with hot summers, moderate to low rainfall, high rainfall variability and frequent droughts.
- Terrain: It has a rugged, rocky and undulating plateau, with an average elevation of 300–400 m, highly eroded uplands and inselbergs.
- Major Rivers: Important rivers include Betwa, Ken, Dhasan and Sonar, along with other seasonal streams.
- Vegetation: The region has thorn and dry deciduous vegetation, along with scattered forests and scrub.
- Flora: Important plant species includebabool, Anjan and Dhaman grass, while berseem and chari are important fodder crops..
- Fauna: Wildlife includes Nilgai, Wild Boar and Indian Wolf.
