News: The event “Scaling Urban Climate Resilience: The CapaCITIES Legacy and Way Forward” celebrated a decade of the CapaCITIES programme in New Delhi.
About CapaCITIES Project

- Capacity Building Project on Low Carbon and Climate Resilient City Development in India (CapaCITIES) is a programme that strengthens the capacity of Indian cities to promote low-carbon and climate-resilient urban development.
- Launched in: The programme was launched in 2016.
- Funder: The programme is funded by the Embassy of Switzerland to India and Bhutan.
- Implementing Agencies: The programme is implemented by ICLEI South Asia, South Pole and econcept.
- Knowledge Partner: The National Institute of Urban Affairs serves as the knowledge partner.
- Objective: The programme aims to build knowledge, tools and institutional capacity for integrating low-carbon and climate-resilient development into urban governance while supporting India’s 2070 net-zero objective.
- Key Features :
- Capacity Building: The programme has equipped Indian cities with knowledge, tools and institutional capacities to integrate low-carbon and climate-resilient development into urban governance.
- City Support: The initiative has supported Coimbatore, Tiruchirappalli, Tirunelveli, Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Vadodara, Udaipur and Siliguri, along with the governments of Gujarat and Tamil Nadu.
- Institutional Development: The programme established permanent Net-Zero and Climate Action Cells in six project cities for long-term implementation, monitoring and climate budgeting.
- Regional Expansion: The capacity-building framework has expanded beyond India to Bhutan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Malaysia.
