News: The Government has proposed a ₹10,000 crore Container Manufacturing Assistance Scheme in the Union Budget 2026–27 to strengthen domestic container production.
About Container Manufacturing Assistance Scheme (CMAS)
- Container Manufacturing Assistance Scheme (CMAS) is a targeted initiative to build a competitive domestic container manufacturing industry through financial and institutional support.
- Ministry involved: The scheme is associated with the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways.
- Aim: The scheme aims to reduce import dependence, strengthen supply-chain resilience and develop a globally competitive container manufacturing ecosystem in India.
- Key Features:
- Financial outlay: The scheme has an outlay of ₹10,000 crore over five years.
- Production capacity: The initiative targets an annual domestic manufacturing capacity of around 10 times the existing container production capacity up-to 7.5 lakh Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEUs).
- It is expected to generate a market opportunity of nearly ₹80000 lakh crore while positioning India as a reliable producer of internationally competitive shipping containers.
- Greenfield support: The scheme provides capital assistance for setting up new Greenfield manufacturing facilities to expand domestic production.
- Brownfield support: It supports the expansion of existing Brownfield manufacturing units and provides operational assistance to improve their competitiveness.
- Infrastructure and skills: It supports testing infrastructure, skilling and capacity building to strengthen the container manufacturing value chain.
- Employment and Manufacturing Opportunities: It has the potential to generate around 3,000 direct jobs and more than 50,000 indirect jobs across container manufacturing and allied industries.
