News: Scientists have discovered Gegeneophis Chandgadi, a new species of subterranean, legless amphibian from Maharashtra.
About Gegeneophis Chandgadi
- Gegeneophis chandgadi is a newly discovered species of legless amphibian, known as a caecilian.
- Family and Genus: The species belongs to the family Grandisoniidae and the genus Gegeneophis, commonly known as blind caecilians.
- It is a group of elusive, limbless amphibians that spend much of their lives underground.
- It was discovered from Maharashtra, in the Western Ghats.
- Habitat: It spends most of their lives underground.
- Features:
- Size: Adult G. chandgadi measure approximately 105–185 mm in length.
- Appearance:
- It has a slender, cylindrical, legless and tailless body.
- Its upper body is dark brown to dark flesh-coloured, with a pinkish head and belly.
- It has 132–135 primary annuli, or ring-like grooves, around its body.
- Conservation status: Researchers have recommended a Data Deficient status until its wider distribution and population are better understood.
