News: India has included Glaw Lake in the Ramsar List, making it Arunachal Pradesh’s first Ramsar Site and India’s 101st Ramsar Site.
About Glaw Lake

- Glaw Lake is a high-altitude natural freshwater lake.
- Location: It is located in Lohit district near Wakro, Arunachal Pradesh.
- Protected Area: The lake lies inside the Kamlang Tiger Reserve and Wildlife Sanctuary, an important biodiversity area.
- key Aspects:
- Lake Origin: The lake was formed by natural tectonic activity and land-block warping.
- Nature: It is a pristine high-altitude natural freshwater lake.
- Elevation: It is approximately 1,168 metres above sea level.
- Size: It covers an estimated surface area of 8 square kilometres.
- Water Source: Fed by perennial mountain streams and serves as the primary source for the Kamlang River.
- Flora: The lake catchment supports over 150 tree species, including Hollong, Canarium, and Rhododendron, along with 49 wild orchid species.
- Indigenous Community: The surrounding traditional lands are inhabited by the Miju Mishmi, Digaro Mishmi, and Idu Mishmi tribal communities.
- Recognition: It has been designated a Ramasar site in August 2026, becoming Arunachal Pradesh’s first Ramsar Site.
- India now has 101 Ramsar Sites, with Glaw Lake becoming Arunachal Pradesh’s first Ramsar Site.
