News: Growing demand for Helium-3 has increased interest in lunar mining and the extraction of the isotope from the Moon.
About Helium-3

- Helium-3 is a rare isotope of helium that is considered one of the most valuable substances found in nature.
- Structure: Helium-3 possesses two protons and one neutron in its atomic nucleus, which distinguishes it from Helium-4 that contains two neutrons.
- Physical State: Helium-3 is a stable, non-radioactive, and chemically inert noble gas.
- It acts as a fermionic superfluid at ultralow temperatures.
- Source & Distribution:
- Scarcity on Earth: Helium-3 is extremely rare on Earth. Most of the current Earthbound supply comes from the decay of tritium in nuclear weapon stockpiles.
- Lunar Distribution: Helium-3 is deposited on the Moon’s surface by solar winds and becomes embedded in the lunar dust (regolith).
- Deep Earth Presence: Small quantities of Helium-3 are believed to escape from deep within the Earth’s core. Scientists have found high levels of the isotope in ancient lava rocks.
- Terrestrial Scarcity: Helium-3 is extremely scarce on Earth, and future demand may exceed current production capabilities as quantum computing becomes more widespread
- Applications:
- Quantum Computing: Helium-3 is an indispensable component in dilution refrigeration systems and helps achieve millikelvin temperatures required for operating quantum processors.
- Radiation Detection and Security: Helium-3 has an exceptionally high absorption cross-section for thermal neutrons, it acts as a highly efficient converter gas in neutron detectors.
- These are heavily used in border crossings and seaports to detect smuggled nuclear materials.
- Medical Diagnostics: Hyperpolarized Helium-3 is used in advanced MRI imaging and provides detailed lung imaging for pulmonary diagnostics.
- Nuclear Fusion: Helium-3 is considered a potential fuel for future nuclear fusion and is being explored as a clean energy source.
- Scientific Research: Helium-3 is used in ultra-low-temperature physics, materials research, particle physics, and dark matter investigations.
