News: India launched its first ‘Easy Connect’ flight under the Hub-and-Spoke Aviation Model from Varanasi to New Delhi.
About Hub-and-Spoke Aviation Model

- Hub-and-Spoke Aviation Model is an aviation model that connects smaller airports, called spokes, with major airports, called hubs, to enable seamless international travel.
- The Spokes: The spoke airports serve as the starting point of the international journey, where passengers complete check-in, immigration and customs formalities before flying to a designated Indian hub airport.
- The Hub: The hub airport receives passengers from the spoke airports and allows them to board their onward international flight without repeating departure formalities.
- Introduced by: Hub-and-Spoke Aviation Model was introduced by the Ministry of Civil Aviation.
- Aim: The model aims to make India the preferred aviation hub for Indian passengers by 2030 and for the world by 2047 while improving connectivity from Tier-II and Tier-III cities.
- Key Features:
- Decentralized Processing: Passengers complete check-in, immigration and customs formalities at the spoke airport, where they receive separate ‘D’ (Domestic) and ‘I’ (International) boarding passes before beginning their international journey.
- Seamless International Transit: Passengers are checked in to their final international destination, their baggage is transferred automatically, and they directly board their onward international flight at the hub airport without repeating departure formalities.
