What are the Interpol notices?
INTERPOL Notices are international requests for cooperation or alerts, allowing police in member countries to share critical crime-related information.
What are the different types of INTERPOL notices?
Type of notice | Objective |
Red Notice | To seek the location or arrest of a person wanted by a judicial jurisdiction or an international tribunal. This notice is for his/her extradition. |
Green Notice | To warn about a person’s criminal activities if that person is considered to be a possible threat to public safety. |
Blue Notice | To locate, identify or obtain information on a person of interest in a criminal investigation. |
Yellow Notice | To locate a missing person or to identify a person unable to identify himself/herself. |
Orange Notice | To warn of an event, a person, an object or a process representing an imminent threat and danger to persons or property. |
Purple Notice | To provide information on modus operandi, procedures, objects, devices, or hiding places used by criminals. |
Black Notice | To seek information on unidentified bodies. |
Interpol – UNSC Special Notice | To inform Interpol’s members that an individual or an entity is subject to UN sanctions. |
What is the difference between Blue corner and Red corner notice?
Area of differences | Blue corner | Red corner |
Objective | It allows police forces in member states to share critical crime-related information such as obtaining a person’s criminal record, and location etc. | It allows member state to arrest a wanted criminal through extradition or any other similar lawful action |
Example | In January 2020, Interpol issued a blue corner notice to help locate fugitive self-styled godman Nithyananda. | In 2018, a red corner notice was issued against fugitive billionaire Nirav Modi in relation to the Punjab National Bank scam |
Timing | Blue corner notices are issued prior to the filing of criminal charges | Red corner notices generally follow criminal convictions |
Political abuse | They are less scrutinised than their red corner notices. Countries exploit existing protocols to target political refugees and dissidents For ex-Blue notices have roughly doubled in number over the past decade. | They may also be abused for targeting political refugees and dissidents. For ex-As per Freedom House, Freedom House, Russia is responsible for 38% of all public red notices. |
