News: India recorded improvements in maternal and child health, while NFHS-6 reported a rise in lifestyle-related diseases among adults.

  • Released by: It is released by the International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS), Mumbai.
    • IIPS is the nodal agency designated by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) for coordination and technical guidance.
  • Survey Period: NFHS-6 was conducted during 2023–24.
  • Key features of NFHS-6:
    • Coverage: The survey covered 6.79 lakh households across 715 districts, excluding Manipur.
    • New Areas: It included Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), Self-Help Groups (SHGs), digital literacy, digital financial transactions.
      • It  expanded  clinical, anthropometric, and biochemical (CAB) testing, including HIV testing.
    • Technology: It fully adopted Computer-Assisted Personal Interviewing (CAPI) for real-time data validation and improved accuracy.
  • Key Findings of NFHS-6 (Comparison between NFHS-5: 2019–21 and NFHS-6: 2023–24)
    • Maternal Health
      • Institutional Deliveries: Institutional deliveries increased from 88.6% to 90.6%.
      • Antenatal Care (ANC): ANC coverage increased from 92.6% to 95.9%, while mothers receiving at least four ANC visits increased from 58.5% to 65.2%.
      • Skilled Birth Attendance: Births attended by skilled health personnel increased from 89.4% to 91.3%.
    • Family Planning
      • Contraceptive Prevalence Rate (CPR): CPR increased from 66.7% to 69.1%.
      • Unmet Need: The unmet need for family planning declined from 9.4% to 8.5%.
      • Total Fertility Rate (TFR): TFR remained stable at 2.0, which is below the replacement level of 2.1.
    • Child Health and Nutrition
      • Full Immunisation: Coverage among children aged 12–23 months increased from 83.8% to 87.1%.
      • Vaccination: Coverage of the second dose of the measles-containing vaccine increased from 58.6% to 71.8%,
        • while rotavirus vaccine coverage increased from 36.4% to 85.4%.
      • Nutrition: Stunting declined from 35.5% to 29.3%,
        • while severe wasting declined from 7.7% to 5.2% among children under five years.
    • Lifestyle Diseases
      • Obesity: 30.7% of women and 27.3% of men aged 15–49 years were overweight or obese.
      • High Blood Sugar: The proportion of adults with high blood sugar increased from 13.5% to 17.8% among women and from 15.6% to 20.9% among men above 15 years of age.
      • Hypertension: The proportion of adults with hypertension declined from 21.3% to 19.4% among women and from 24.0% to 22.1% among men above 15 years of age.

  • National Family Health Survey (NFHS) is a large-scale, multi-round survey conducted on a representative sample of households across India.
  • Origin: It was launched in 1992–93.
  • Objective: It provides district-level data on health and family welfare for evidence-based policymaking and programme implementation.
