News: The US struck Larak Island on August 30 after observing Iranian forces preparing to launch rockets with sea mines into the Strait of Hormuz.

  • Larak Island is a small island near the Strait of Hormuz with major strategic importance due to its location.
  • Location: It is approximately 45 km southeast of Bandar Abbas, south of Hormuz Island and about 18 km southeast of the eastern end of Qeshm Island.
  • Area: The island covers roughly 49 sq. km.
  • Key Features:
    • Strategic location: Larak, Qeshm and Hormuz form a group of three islands near the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz.
    • Military Foothold: Iran has a military outpost on Larak Island, which provides a base to monitor ships passing through the waterway.
    • Control over Shipping: Iran has directed vessels to use a route passing north of Larak, close to its coastline.
    • Sea Mine Concern: The US struck the island after observing Iranian forces preparing to launch rockets carrying sea mines into the Strait of Hormuz.
