About Mahatma Ayyankali
- Mahatma Ayyankali was a pioneering social reformer and Dalit rights leader from Keralam who challenged caste based discrimination in Travancore.
- Birth: He was born to Ayyan and Mala in 1863 in Venganoor, Kerala.
- Community: He belongs to the Pulaya community, one of the most depressed castes in Kerala.
- Impactful factor: His early experiences with caste discrimination profoundly influenced his lifelong commitment to social reform.
- Initial Resistance: He began challenging caste-based oppression by bringing Pulayars together through songs, protests, and collective efforts.
- Over time, his courage and leadership inspired many people from marginalized communities to join the struggle for equality.
- Influences: His ideas were shaped by prominent social reformers such as Ayyavu Swamikal and Sree Narayana Guru.
- He also became part of Kerala’s wider movement for social equality, working to oppose caste discrimination and improve the lives of oppressed communities.
- Contributions of Mahatma Ayyankali
- Villuvandi Protest (1893): He rode a bullock cart on public roads, challenging the caste restrictions that prevented oppressed communities from using public roads and wearing clean clothes.
- Right to Use Public Roads: He organised marches and protests demanding freedom of movement for oppressed castes. His efforts helped secure access to public roads by 1900.
- Fight for Education: He demanded admission of Pulaya children into public schools and even started a school at Venganoor in 1904.
- Sadhu Jana Paripalana Sangham (1907): Ayyankali established this organisation to improve the condition of poor and marginalized people.
- Agricultural Labour Strike: He led a strike demanding education for Pulaya children.
- Kallumala Samaram (1915): He supported the struggle of Pulaya women against restrictions on clothing and caste-marking ornaments, encouraging them to reject symbols imposed by caste discrimination.
- Political Representation: In 1910, Ayyankali entered the Travancore Legislative Assembly as its first Pulaya representative.
- Death: He passed away on June 18, 1941.
- Legacy: His efforts to secure educational opportunities for the marginalized, improve the lives of agricultural workers and serve the poor remain inspiring and give strength to all those working for social empowerment.
